I... Hate writing this sort of thing. Well, hate is a strong word, but it definitely falls under dislike. I've read this sort of thing before and it always strikes me as gratifying the author.

As such I tried to stay as far away from gratifying myself with this work as possible. I tried to make it read almost clinically, so I could push through it without harming the story by letting my opinion push through.

I don't even know how I first started reading stuff like this. Somehow I came across it, and have been subsequently subjected to some of the most atrocious writing I have ever known. I'm not even talking about a disgust against the topic at hand, but rather just lazy description.

It's addicting, somehow. Like watching a wreck.

By way of one of the most grievous examples: Do NOT use a time-honored, cherished example as a yardstick for your character's capability. I am sick and tired of reading "<insert number> Times Stronger than Superman" across the Internet.
-I'm sorry, but if this is the sort of crutch you use to describe your character's "unstoppable capability," you have failed to prove to your reader that you're taking your work seriously.

I've been meaning to vent that for a LONG time, and I felt here it's appropriate. I'm a believer in fair play. I believe that everybody, no matter what the odds, has the opportunity to turn the tide.

Take the situation in Ninja Scroll (獣兵衛忍風帖, Jūbei Ninpūchō ), where the main character (Jubei) is staring down a man rapidly turning into stone. His reaction? "You can't be all rock..." then he stabs the thug in the eye and hijinks ensue (here's a hint for those out of the know: Big, Tough and Strong dies by the end, by means he hadn't been paying attention to).

Power Fantasy can be fun, and when well-written can be fantastically entertaining (Sin City's Marv, for instance). All you would-be warriors, remember that the next time you're roiding out your girls so they can melt tanks like butter with their posteriors.
